How the picture gets to your eye

A screen the size of a stamp.

A 0.96 inch OLED stands inside the hood above the right eye, facing sideways. White pixels on black. Black is what makes this work: an unlit pixel is simply transparent later on.

The mirror

One turn, straight down.

The screen shines sideways into a front-surface mirror set at 45 degrees. The mirror sends the light down, toward the eye. That is the only mirror in the path.

The lens

Push the picture out to arm's length.

Your eye cannot focus on something four centimetres away. A 50 mm lens in the hood floor makes the screen appear 20 to 40 cm in front of you. Sliding the OLED a few millimetres sets the distance.

The half-mirror

Bounce, do not pass.

Under the lens hangs a beam splitter tilted at 45 degrees. The light coming down hits it and bounces sideways, straight into your eye. Nothing passes through here from above.

The world

Half of the room, half of the screen.

The same plate is only half silvered. Light from in front of you passes through it into the same eye. Room and screen arrive on one line of sight, and two reflections mean the text reads the right way round.

This is the whole screen.

128 by 64 pixels, white on black, drawn exactly as the glasses will draw it. Ask something. The real thing answers in your ear as well.
